I was excited for this book as soon as I found out the concept and the characters who were coming back to be subjected to Grayson’s deliciously evil whims. It did not disappoint. I blasted through the book, on the verge of tears through 75% of it, and was holding my face like I was watching an action movie.Best moments/elements for me?// SPOILERS //- Watching Jared learn to be queer, instead of just a dude who f**ks dudes. YES, there’s a difference! His growth from being a masculine top to learning to be submissive, doted upon, protected, cherished, and utterly dominated was a huge rush for me to read. The way he recontextualized pleasure and learned to think of his body differently as a newly-hatched bottom was magnificently written.- THE REUNION. YES, YOU KNOW THE ONE I’M TALKING ABOUT. Okay, maybe you don’t. This one is a MAJOR spoiler, so read at your own peril! Skip the parentheses if not.(((...yes, Arik and Calder. OH. MY. GOD. I cried! I truly cried, and now it lives rent free in my mind. Everything I wanted for Arik, seriously.)))- Bouncing off that... The Armitage cast was phenomenal as a unit. Ian crying! Nate being a snarky glutton for punishment (as usual)! Arik becoming domesticated?! What a rush, and very welcome after the breather that was The Alpha Experiment — also a great book, if you haven’t read it yet.- Contrasting the brutal circumstances and trauma with Calder’s gentle adoration of Jared. Making him feel cherished and making love to him and being steadfast in never hurting him... wow. A unique direction for this trope in many ways. Usually the huge growly alpha monster is more on the rough side even if he’s gentle with his lover in other ways. No, Calder was a great & refreshing spin on that archetype. Very “gentle giant” — when he wants to be.By my perception this story is relatively plot-lite and heavier on the intense character dynamic, which plays to its strengths. If we had to deal with a lot “happening” on top of the ruthless emotional overload it might have made the soft moments hit differently and the weighted moments a bit off-balance. I loved seeing the focus on Jared’s emotional growth rather than a high-danger action plot like The Alpha’s Warlock or Captive Mate.Don’t let that fool you though, because the climax is mind-blowing. Grayson lives up to her reputation for not pulling punches when it comes to portraying ugliness.I’d rate it 10/5 if I could. It’s competing for my favourite book in the series. Internal monologues suck. Especially when it goes on non-stop.A fifth of the book down, one character is hugely annoying; enough so that I have no desire to find anything more out about the other MC.And I don't think the character ever actually takes responsibility for the actions and continues to whangst throughout the book.And, let's face it, dubious consent is no consent. Please stop with the wordgames.
